Alert Report: How Adsense Crushes Your Earning Potential & Blog Traffic
Posted on 11. Mar, 2009 by Ashwin in Monetizing
One of the worst things a blogger could do is to “monetize” — the act of adding little widgets who work like minions to earn you a pittance — using adsense. I don’t have anything against adsense but the point here is that adsense is a model that makes a little money for you; a lot of money for Google and bring some traffic for the merchants advertising/spending for their marketing.
The secret to getting loads of traffic isn’t really to GET traffic. It has more to do with what you do after you get that traffic. You see, with adsense, you are letting them go click-happy and head away into the depths of the Internet. Your blog readers or visitors get into a vicious cycle of
1. Arriving at your website because of all the hardwork you have put in to get them.
2. Clicking at one of those ad sense ads — so you made your dimes and cents, haven’t you?
3. Going away to that website which was being advertised on your blog.
The point of contention is that this traffic that you worked hard for is now gone. Why could you tap it instead? Why not grab this traffic by collar and keep it tethered? Why not give them a freebie — a valuable booklet, ebook, whitepaper or a report in exchange for the email id of your visitors and then keep sending them emails slowly later.
If you could give away something useful for free and then send equally useful emails, your readers will begin to trust you and like you. Once this happens, you can start selling some products – either your own or someone else’s ( Affiliate Marketing).
So the right way of going about your blogging or Internet Endeavors is this:
1. Get Traffic.
2. Take email ids in exchange for something valuable.
3. Set up auto-responder and send emails regularly — provide good content in email and engender trust.
4. Sell own products or affiliate products.
On experimental basis then, we at Blogging Elements are looking to provide an incredibly useful manual on setting up blogs properly and maintaining them for the complete beginner. The work is currently underway and we should be able to do what we just spoke about now. I seriously think that adsense is an one-off proposition and allows you to earn a pittance and that too just once.
Looks like a lot of people are getting it wrong, don’t you think?

It is very important to gain loyal readers first and some traffic before starting monetizing.
Lovely post!

Still, there are people who are quietly making thousands with Google Adsense every month.
You can’t go wrong with that, yes?

Salwa — I second that. It is very important to gain traffic before monetizing your blog. Perhaps an or two won’t hurt, but if a blog screams of ads everywhere it will head straight for doomsville.
Deimos Tel’ Arin — No, you can’t go wrong with those people earning thousands from adsense; but I wanted to point to the fact that hundreds of people have successfully landed on the respective blogs of each of the Adsense Warriors and immediately left the site to see other sites. They could have been captured and marketed to again and again, yes? Why only thousands of dollars when millions are possible?
