How To Make Your Readers Take Action

Posted on 28. Jan, 2010 by Ashwin in Blogging

Most writing is often based on a writers’ reflections, thoughts, ideas and opinions and they don’t mean much to anyone else except the writers themselves. The purpose of a blog is actually much more than that; it’s has all of the above elements and on top of it, there is an inherent need for a blog post to invoke some kind of response from the readers. When you write a post, it  is important that your blog post gets some kind of response. Here are ways to do it:

Ask for it: Too many opportunities pass by and you don’t end up taking them up because you didn’t ask for it — either you were too shy to ask, you’ve had qualms asking for it or perhaps you just forgot to ask. When you write a post, make it a point to include a line or two asking for what your readers are thinking. Maybe you could request them to take a specific action like signing up for your newsletter or maybe give you a call or even download a free report.

Use language and copywriting skills: Understand the pulse of your readers and step on their toes. Make them talk by asking questions, instigate their opinions and start a discussion. Use language skills and semantics to twist words and say things in a way that invoke a response. By putting 2 and 2 together creatively, you could make almost anyone respond.

Keep it focused and say just one thing at a time: In the field of advertising and copy, for instance, the best advertisements are those that focus on communicating just a single message in the form of visuals, copy or both. In the case of a blog post, it is important that you stay focused and keep your post focused on a single point of view. No rambling analysis or “oh-I’have-just-been-thinking-aloud-and-writing” kind of posts.

Do you have any more ideas for making readers take action immediately after reading your posts? Do let me know your point of view by posting your comments here?
