Microsoft Office Sucks: Go Blog On Something Else

Technology has a beautiful way to freak me out; this isn’t the first time I got jinxed. My iphone gave up on me the other day and now my ASUS Eee PC 1000H netbook just got conked. I happened to be working on it; went for a break and then came back to see that it got into this never ending loop of “Sorry, windows couldn’t load due to a software/hardware change“.
It’s been two days now without that little monster in my hands and I feel stripped bare. What does that tell me?
- Technology is like an unpredictable, arrogant teenager: You never know what a teenager might end up doing, would you? Nasty, young brats. All these gadgets are like that — iphone, blackberry, android, laptops, leaptops, failtops, whatever. It just doesn’t get any better for you when you have been working on a project and your system suddenly crashes, hurling you right back into stone-age.
- Go find your cloud: I was just thinking about the obvious advantages of cloud computing and using web-based tools for all our web related work. It was like all those tools were grinning at me with that look that seems to say ” I-told-you-so”. So like a monkey with a tender coconut, I am all weary but still excited about the fact that with Google Documents, Zoho Suite, etc, I don’t have to depend on a cranky laptop or PC with an even more juvenile and unpredictable Microsoft XP.
- Without back-ups, you are playing a tricky video game with one life: Life is complicated as it is and we humans excel at making it even more complex. We could do little things to make our lives better and yet we don’t do a thing. In my case, I didn’t. I had no back-ups for all my work. I have been working on several projects and all of that just got vaporized. Can you imagine the pain of re-working on all those projects? There are some nifty online back-up systems which can continuously update all data on your computer on a redundant server (with another back-up).
Now, I know. Have you had an experience of losing all your data just like that? Do let us know here, we will feel better with others having swallowed the bitter pill I just did
( We are sick, aren’t we?)

Wow how do you really feel? I have had many of these same experiences with MS operating systems. The service is not much help either. one time I had to pay 50 bucks just to get some service from them. This is why one of my top goals is to purchase an Apple MacbookPro as soon as possible. On there defense they also have made our world a different and better place. With this allowing us all to more productive on and off line. It is like a love hate thing and for you write now a hate thing.

Me too. I am looking to buy a Macbook Air for myself too; it is expensive so it will be worth saving for.
Until then, I think I will just go to the cloud and work there.

Excellent posting , You definately hit the
nail on the head, I just don’t understand why people quite get what you’re saying.
I’m not for sure how many people I’ve talked to about this very
thing in the past few days, and they just don’t grasp it.
I happened upon this blog by searching on google. I’m quite happy I found it!
Never the less, Excellent post!

Try running office 2003 in Vista (because you dislike the new office even more than the last). It seems then are purposefully making this difficult so you have to buy office 2007. I’m sitting here using excel 2003 while listening to music with headphones. Everytime I do anything in excel it is beeping loudly in my ears. I’ll try to turn the noise off now, but MS makes me apathetic because it sucks so bad. It seems like trying to customize a car that you hate and is about to stop working.

The interface is completely changed. Auto-formatting of captions and citations is hopelessly broken and non-functional. Styles do not stay – Word reverts to default no matter how many times you change it. Randomly reformats document to new text/spacing/alignment. Text flow around images hopeless broken and non-functional. Basically – it all looks different, nothing works, and there appears to be no hope if getting it fixed any time soon. Save your money and sanity, buy an older version such as 2003, download the free converter so you can read documents from people who have unfortunately “upgraded” to 2007, and wait until the next release. Or two. Or three. Or for a competitor to come out with a functional word processor. Basically – this is the most useless suite of applications I’ve ever had the misfortune of owning. Avoid it.
